Interesting Conversation

Aly and I had an interesting conversation this week. She asked me about Civil Rights Day and what it was all about. I tried to simplify a complex issue for 7 year old ears to understand. I explained that long ago, some people believed that they could hurt, be mean and treat others unkind, only because they looked different than them. She thought that was very strange.

I explained that if we lived long ago, we couldn't be friends with our Cuban/Polish neighbors, several of her classmates and other friends from the apartments. She didn't like that and thought it was silly to not like someone because there skin, hair or language is different. She realized that the color of a person's skin, is of no more significance than the color of their eyes. I explained that people got smarter and realized that everyone is the same on the inside...and so we created Civil Rights Day to celebrate our change in attitude.

Wow. I am amazed at Aly's smarts. Well done explaining that one. I'll be interested to hear what you say when she asks where babies come from...or has she already asked that one?! :)
